Terms of Service
Last updated: July 13, 2026
This document is provided in English, which is the authoritative version.
Skim is free, open-source software provided under the MIT license. By downloading, installing, or using Skim, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the application.
1. The software
Skim is a local-first email client for Windows distributed at github.com/nikserg/skim. It connects directly to email services and, optionally, AI providers that you choose and control. The Skim project operates no servers and provides no hosted service; it distributes an application that runs on your own device.
2. License
Skim is licensed under the MIT License. That license governs your rights to use, copy, modify, and distribute the software, and its terms are incorporated here by reference.
3. Your responsibilities
- You are responsible for the email accounts, credentials, and API keys you connect to Skim, and for keeping them secure.
- You must comply with the terms of service of any third-party provider you use through Skim, including your email provider and your AI provider.
- You must use Skim lawfully and not for sending spam, malware, or unlawful content, or otherwise abusing the services you connect.
- You are responsible for any costs you incur with third parties — in particular, usage charges billed by your AI provider for API calls that Skim makes on your behalf.
4. Third-party services
Skim interoperates with services operated by others (for example your email host, Anthropic, or OpenRouter). The Skim project does not control these services, is not responsible for them, and makes no warranty regarding their availability, security, or content. Your use of them is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
5. AI-generated content
When you use AI features, output is generated by a third-party model and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate. You are responsible for reviewing AI-generated drafts and summaries before relying on or sending them. Skim does not guarantee the correctness of any AI output.
6. No warranty
Skim is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, as set out in the MIT License. You use the software at your own risk.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the authors or copyright holders of Skim be liable for any claim, damages, data loss, or other liability, whether in an action of contract, tort, or otherwise, arising from, out of, or in connection with the software or its use.
8. Privacy
Your use of Skim is also described by our Privacy Policy, which explains how data is handled (in short: locally, on your device, with no collection by the project).
9. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as the software evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date, and the full history is publicly visible in the project's Git repository. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
10. Contact
Questions about these Terms can be raised via GitHub Issues.
